General Comments:
Newland Avenue has a good variety of independent shops and convenience shops. There is no need for any more shops, but the former Newland Avenue School provides much-needed room which could be used for a larger variety of community activities.
I would like it to be multifunctional – used for all the above [suggestions] and you could use the school hall for dances as well as a library.
Back to a school preferably. A community venue.
Keep it community based or back to a school.
All the above [suggestions] would be a fantastic asset for the community but not shops, flats or car parks.
Art and creative centre – this city is a creative place.
A School or Community Trust / Heritage Site / Conserved.
Exercise classes, children’s’ park, play area.
Kitchen café / Pop up space.
Something to benefit our community – don’t need any more housing or bars.
Community cinema / Homeless Hostel
I suggest a primary school because there is one school in this area; it is too crowded with children so it will be helpful to be a big primary school.
A facility aimed at bettering the welfare of the community through education.
A community centre where locals could meet, attend classes such as keep fit aimed at the elderly or those who wouldn’t use a gym. Maybe a crèche where children could be looked after whilst parents shopped.
Some kind of community hub for adults / children, somewhere the local community can use.
Keep the building for local use NOT pubs, café, or café bars (Too many already) we cannot park easily at the moment so pubs etc will take up space for parking.
A community centre / food & leisure.
Adult education centre or sheltered accommodation.
I would support any of the community or arts based ideas.
Very important to retain the site as a civic / public space to help support the community, build networks and help integrate the diverse people and cultures in the area.
Remove much of the outer walls and fence and open up this space as a PIAZZA. We would admire this on the continent, on holiday, do it here!
Studio Flat with mezzanine for bed room to house single people on benefits / low income.
I would be happy to consider & support any suggestion that aimed to serve the community in an enriching way.
Garden Area:
The former playground could be used as a space where local residents and shoppers could relax and as a play area for accompanied children.
There are few green spaces on Newland so it should be a public garden with local people tending it.
The garden is a good idea but maintenance could be a problem.
It needs to be kept locked on an evening.
Keep it community based.
Seats around the garden.
For community use!
Open Air Theatre & Performance Space
Community Garden / Vegetable growing Demonstration Site.
A nice place to visit for the community.
Refurbishment of ground for community sport.
We need gardens to help the wildlife & planet, sports area to be used by youth club.
As most houses in the area have little or no garden the green space is a valuable asset and the sports area could be used by youth especially in the summer for football or other ball games.
Keep for local children so they have somewhere to go instead of hanging out on the street.
Recreation for local residents.
It would help the youngsters.
I would strongly oppose any proposals which did not retain the gardens and sports facilities for community use. The garden on site was originally designed and built by the local community and the surrounding streets house hundreds of families who do not have their own gardens or any green space within safe walking distance for children. This site is the only real opportunity to provide green space for local residents.
There are hardly any local green areas or places for recreation. Important to retain trees and plants to preserve the wildlife.
Keep the garden and sports area, open air theatre space and the 43 trees on the site.
Allotments, mini allotments for time tied people.
Community gardens appear to be enjoying success elsewhere as they provide a sense of well-being by promoting co-operation and a strong sense of wellbeing by promoting co-operation and a strong sense of purpose, as well as combatting loneliness.
Youth Clubs:
Youth clubs are good ideas providing that people running them are assisted.
It is important to keep the youth club / sport facility as there are so few places for young people to meet and learn.
Young people need somewhere to go.
The area needs to retain a youth club.
There is always a need for somewhere the young can go.
Get young people off the streets
Extended to other parts / Facilities in building.
The space is used well at the moment and would be amazing to open up wider.
Good for youth.
I used the youth club when growing up in the area and was a welcome place to go on the dark and summer nights.
Young teenagers need somewhere to go otherwise they just roam the streets.
The youth club offers a safe place for children to misbehave, it should be kept.
Young people have nowhere to go.
The youth club is a valuable asset as there is nowhere, other than Pearson Park, for younger members of the community.
There is a need for a club but the children should not run amok.
Keep the Youth Club for local kids.
The youth club has on the whole never been a problem over the years.
Young people have few if any spaces in the area. They need spaces to meet and enjoy activities.
Keep the youth facilities. Add fitness for all ages.
Not sure about but perhaps a more modern and appropriate name could be used. If the youth club were to continue perhaps inspirational & creative supervisors would be necessary / advantageous.
Comments against Community Asset
“Community “ things just don’t work – too many “high horses”
We have one of the best parks around the corner.
Grounds should be removed to make more parking so that parking is taken away from the street therefor making car parking for home owners easier.
